Our first off-road ride! It was fun! We went out of Carson City on Brunswick Canyon Rd, and that joined up with Sunrise Pass Rd. Then we took Sunrise Pass over the pass and went back towards Dayton on Como Rd. Como was very rough.

We made it to Double Hot Springs (180F - really hot!) in the Black Rock Desert. Down the hill there was a nice pool to soak in. But it was really hot outside. . .

Soldier Meadow Warm Pond, northwest NV in the Black Rock Desert Conservation Area. This pond was excellent to swim in, and it was 100F, perfect temperature for a warm day.

We took the baja out to the Black Rock Desert for Memorial Day Weekend. When we were near Soldier Meadows, the rear control arm cracked down the middle near the shock mount! We got a ride from some people to the Solder Meadows Ranch, where they had a welder. Romy welded the arm back together with some scrap steel and we were back in business!

I am flying home from Vegas. You can see the MGM Grand through the window (the bright green casino).

I am visiting the DRI campus in Las Vegas today! I had meetings with some colleagues here.

Tonight we are staying at the Atlantis in Reno. I have an early morning flight to Vegas tomorrow morning, so we used a coupon for a free hotel room at the Atlantis, which is right next to the Reno airport.

Good morning! Romy is all ready to go to work (we camped at Sand Mountain) but I just woke up and have to drive back to Reno!

Romy

Its after sunset, and a rainy, cold evening at Sand Mountain. Romy is testing that huge Canadian tank behind him on the sand dunes for work.

Today we took Bubbles to a VW show in Reno at the Tamarack Junction. There were a bunch of Beetles and Jason's old split window bus.

We took a hike on Jone's Creek and White's Creek trails near Mt. Rose - it was very windy but nice views! This is looking east towards Reno.

I am keeping warm next to the small grill. We made chicken sausages for dinner.

Romy

Romy's going to be working at Sand Mountain next week, and camping there with some of the people he works with, so we went to Costco to load up on supplies (which barely fit inside the baja).

Romy's probably annoyed because I never get out of the baja when he pumps gas! Its getting warmer outside now.

Typical day at work. Its been kind of cold in my office lately.

Wow! A letter came to me at work from Alaska. I was awarded a travel grant by the U.S. Permafrost Association to help pay for my plane ticket to Portugal this June for the 4th European Permafrost Conference. Yay! Thank you!

Hehehehehe, I caught Romy brushing his teeth!

The Buick made it across the country (shipped by Yuri the Uki) and just barely fit in a 10x20ft storage garage! Yay!

Bubbles finally has a Nevada plate, and its the coolest plate ever!

Check out the lawn! Its still yellow but soon the sprinklers will be turned back on and it will be green again! I just raked it and trimmed it.

I am going to a meeting at UNR to talk to Brian and Mark Walker, the dean of he UNR Cooperative Extension Program.

I love Harbor Freight! We've never lived so close to one before! We decided that every time we go in from now on, we will take a picture. Who actually buys this pipe wrench!? Do you need a machete?

Romy

Romy's working on his KLR (which needed much more work than mine, but was also half the price). Needs a new battery and a new seat for now.

Romy

Romy was just doing something to the baja. He drives it to work everyday.

We're working on lowering my KLR250 bike! Soon I'll be riding for real once my feet can touch the ground!
